Theme: Children Exposed to Family Violence and Indiginous Women
The immediate and long lasting effect of domestic violence on children who witness or are subjected to abuse is well documented as a violation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Recovering from such trauma requires effective support and early, culturally appropriate, intervention. These sessions will inform women’s shelters around the world on best practices, risk assessment, impact on children and programs for early intervention and healing.
Women's rights are fundamental human rights, preclude any discrimination, and go beyond cultural and religious diversities. Women may suffer discrimination not only as women but also as part of a minority ethnic group or religion. In Canada, for example, Aboriginal women are at higher risk of violence and do not share the same legal protection as non-aboriginal women. Their rights are not secured under the Canadian Charter. Workshops will also identify challenges, and innovative approaches.
